Hydration

Water is a critical element of the body and keeping the body adequately hydrated is essential for optimal function. Up to 75% of the body’s weight is made up of water most of which is found within the cells. Water is responsible for about 30% of metabolism and is a major component of blood, which carries oxygen and nutrients to the muscles. Staying hydrated makes this process run efficiently, maximizing oxygen delivery to muscles and other tissues. Electrolytes are certain minerals such as chloride, magnesium, potassium, sodium that are essential for life and responsible for directing water to where it is needed and maintaining optimal fluid balance within our cells. Caffeine and alcohol are consumed at high amounts in an American diet, both of which are diuretics, substances that cause the loss of water increasing the risk of dehydration.

Precautions

People may experience a feeling of warmth when receiving the IV. Rare complications that can occur during intravenous therapies include phlebitis (inflammation of the vein) and fluid infiltration (leaking of fluid into the surrounding tissues)
